Philips Hue is a smart lighting system with extensive switching and control functions such as controlling the temperature, colour and intensity of the light and combining lamps into lighting scenes. The central unit of the system is the Hue Bridge. The configuration is done with the Hue App on mobile devices.

How Philips Hue works

Hue by Philips is a leading smart lighting for individual smart home solutions. The Hue Bridge serves as a central gateway for the configuration and communication of all Hue system components. The Hue App on a mobile device is used for configuration and operation.

To access system components with the Hue app, the Hue Bridge must be connected to a Wi-Fi router. The Hue app communicates with the bridge via Wi-Fi, and the bridge in turn communicates with system components via ZigBee radio.

Wi-Fi is therefore only necessary if the system is to be configured or operated via the Hue app. If, for example, the Wi-Fi function is deactivated at night, the lamp can still be switched on via ZigBee radio on the button of a Hue switch.

The transmission technology used is ZigBee Light-Link. Up to 25 Friends of Hue switches and a total of 50 system components can be connected, configured and controlled with a Hue Bridge.

Functions On Philips Hue luminaires or lamps, you can change the light intensity (dimming), the light colour (RGB) or the light temperature (cool to warm white). Groups can be formed from several luminaires or lamps, light scenes can be configured and called up - also time-dependent. Sensors such as motion detectors can also be used for light control.

Retrofitting Existing luminaires can be retrofitted with Hue lamps with the classic E27 and E14 sockets. The Hue App With the Hue App for iOS and Android, Hue lamps and luminaires can be configured and controlled on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart watches.

Remote access via Hue Bridge The home Hue network can also be accessed on the move if the Hue Bridge is connected to the router.

The range The manufacturer Philips offers a comprehensive range of products for indoor and outdoor use. Other manufacturers offer system-compatible products under the "Friends of Hue" label.

Friends of Hue Switch The Friends of Hue wireless switch with the PTM switching unit from EnOcean works via energy harvesting and thus without cables and without batteries, which is easy to install and requires no maintenance in the long term. The switch can be integrated into any Hue network and used for individual lighting control. In this way, individual lamps, luminaires or entire lamp groups can be controlled.

How to configure the switch

Configuring a Friends of Hue device

To configure, open the Hue app on your smart phone. Then open the Settings section in the app and select the item "Add accessories" and "Friends of Hue switch" as well as the switch type "The hide box". The Hue App will guide you through all further configuration steps. In order for the switch to be recognised in the Hue App, first press the top right rocker switch, then simultaneously press the top right and bottom left rocker switches. If the switch is recognised, it is automatically added to your installation.

This switch with a cover frame can be installed over all existing wired switches without having to interfere with the electrical installation. Only the plastic frame and the rocker elements of the existing switch are removed and only the switch insert is left in the flush-mounted box.
